The Eight Trigrams
The East/West Theory, or 8-House Theory, divides a floor plan into 8 sections forming a grid, which is laid over a building floor plan and creates the basis for calculations together with an exact direction reading using a Chinese "Lopan Compass".
Both people and buildings belong to one of these 8 trigrams, 4 are East Group and 4 are West Group:
- East Group is comprised of: North, South, Southeast and East
- West Group is comprised of: Northeast, Northwest, Southwest and West.
It would be ideal for a West Group person to live in a West Group house and the same for East Group.
The Chinese use two calendars, one follows the movement of the moon and the other system follows the movement of the sun, which is used for Feng Shui and Four Pillar astrology. The Chinese Solar calendar begins each year on the 4th or 5th of February, which is halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.
If you have seen the paper placemats in Chinese restaurants or most books giving information about the 12 animals and their traits, they do not usually tell you to start the year on the Feb 3 or 4 depending on the year. If you were born in January 1953 and thought you were a Snake this would be incorrect, you would actually fall into the previous year of 1952 and you would be a Dragon.
